The Steady Covid Creep

The Covid numbers have been climbing steadily in the Eastern Cape, with the Kouga region not going unscathed. On Sunday 22 November the number of active cases was thus: Humansdorp: 120, Jeffreys Bay: 111, Patensie: 33, Hankey: 32 and St Francis Bay: 11. There is a total of 318 active cases in the Kouga region, with the numbers rising daily.

As a result, the Kouga Local Municipality has cancelled all municipal funded and co-hosted events over the festive season.
Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, said the Municipality had no other option but attempt to nip the problem in the bud by cancelling all Kouga Municipality funded and co-hosted events.

“Unfortunately, due to the spike in Covid-19 cases and an evident surge of the second wave in the Municipality we cannot continue with these events”, he said.

“We do acknowledge that the National Disaster Management Act restrictions on the number of people allowed at public gatherings have been amended. Still, it is important to halt all events and protect those who would be involved in them”.

St Francis Property Owners Association and NPC Annual General Meetings To Be Webinars

Both the SFPO Association and SFPO NPC AGMs will be held on 21 December 2020. As a result of the Covid situation, both meetings will be conducted via a webinar. Fire Prohibition Period Announced Throughout Kouga, Including No Fireworks.

Kouga Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Daniel Benson, said the annual fire prohibition period for the region started on 1 November and would continue until 28 February 2021.

“Summer, with its high temperatures and strong winds, is the time when there is the highest risk of runaway fires destroying properties and lives,” he said.

“As part of our efforts to keep Kouga safe, no controlled burns will be allowed during this period. Residents are urged to be extra careful when it comes to setting anything alight, be it candles or braais.”

“Open fires are also not allowed at public areas unless in designated braai stands.”

He said fire transgressions, including the illegal trade or discharge of fireworks, could be reported to the Kouga Call Centre at 042 200 2200 or after-hours to 042 291 0250.
